Take a handful of cotton wool. Now shove it in your ear. Pack enough in there that it blocks all the sound, so all you can hear is the throb of your heartbeat and the whistling sound of breathing (which is surprisingly loud). Now add in a bit more, so the whole lot begins to ache, just a little. That's what I've got at the moment; my left ear is full of wax.
It's not so much painful as unbelievably annoying. With no sound coming in, it's like my left ear is straining to hear anything, as if turning up the volume on the left to the max while leaving the right as it is, so static fills my head. This effect is less pronounced when there is actually noise about for my right ear, but I can't stick my headphones on at work - it is allowed, but if I just use one ear, I won't be able to hear anything going on in the room.
I'm having trouble sleeping, too. The constant whine in my ear is keeping me awake. I'm going to have to go get my ears syringed. The trouble is, I haven't been to the doctors in more than five years - I'm still registered back at home, not locally. It'll probably take a while to change over, and then they'll want me to take a week of putting drops in my ear (which never works).
So bloody annoying.
